COMPOSITION
The selection and arrangement of elements in a space to express an idea clearly and effectively-for a harmonious result.
A successful image is the result of both drawing and planning-no plans will lead to an unsatisfactory end result.
An idea begins in the mind and an image beings with an idea (effect/mood/story)
Plan how to emphasise these elements that need most effect - size and depth and where on the page
Artists think on paper...need to put all ideas down on paper, broad and flexible roughs/sketches
Once you have good metal images that is half of the battle-need to try out different arrangements and concentrate on big forms initially.
4 main elements: Area (frame and dimensions)
Depth (perspective and distance)
Line (line of sight down and across the page)
Value (light, dark, tone)
TASK:
Figure: Nudist
Place: In front of the fire
Object: Fridge
Before I even began attempting to tackle this task I decided I needed some drawings from reference to give me some guidelines and proportion...
These are the first drawings I have done of a naked person from reference/ ever (apart from 2 life drawing classes but both of male models).
These are my composition lay outs... 1) is quite simple, 2) has interesting angle of the set up (difficult perspective), 3) is just a compilation of the 3 images, 4) interesting because it is like you and viewing form inside the fridge (difficult to imagine and therefore execute well), 5) only half of the image has the components, 6) divided up through a window (works well because it is like someone observing a nudist at home
I began again by drawing out everything as an outline in pencil before applying the red ink. I had to take a leap of faith that it wouldn't matter everything was rough and not exact (definitely not the way I feel comfortable working) and hope that when detailed lines were added it would make it look better.
I started outlining everything in black... window in the foreground with darker more solid lines, then outlined the fridge and its handles. I then drew the nudist and then the fire behind her.
I wanted to incorporate some patterns into the image because I had decided to keep it a tonal image so added swirls, a red grid and lines in the fire.
I discovered that I needed a figure as reference for my final image so kindly my friend volunteered to pose for me as I drew her.
I like the fact that the nudist is pale as it draws the eye to the right hand top corner. Also it makes sense because she is "glowing" in the fire.
The window divides the image up into 4 corners but starting slightly higher/above the centre . Therefore the foreground of the image is quite empty and the eye is drawn to the upper third of the page.

I started off drawing the outline of the composition in pencil. Then tried to apply colour... turns out my paper wasn't good enough quality and absorbed the ink strangely and the paper began to curl and wrinkle. So I decided to start again
